Sig Edgetra
I have been flying RC for decades and have designed built and flown 6 models of my own as well as a lot of kit and ARF models. I like aerobatics and have had several pattern ships. I like the SIg 4 Star ARF models. Have a taildragger version and a modified nose gear version. They look good and fly well. I thought the Sig Edgetra would be the same experience. It is advertised as a 4S model. The kIt is superbly built and had a nearly perfect covering job. Looks great. I have had great experience with Spectrum Avian motors so got their largest 4 S motor and expected to use 4000 4S batteries which I use in several of my models. The plans specify long control horns but high rate throws produce about twice the recommended throws on aileron and elevator. When complete the model was very tail heavy. So much so that a 5000 4S would not get the CG right. It would take about 5 ounces of lead at the front of cowl to balance with that battery. Not wanting useless weight I went with a 6S motor and 6S 4000 battery. That balanced full forward battery but the first flight the airplane still seemed tail heavy. It displays a lot of adverse yaw when rolling, Rolls like a high wing airplane and it wants to tip stall when you slow it down to land. I made a second flight with elevator trim adjustments and the airplane continued to fly like it was tail heavy. Put 1/2 oz weight inside front of the cowl next flying session and it did not improve flying characteristics. I nearly lost it on my last flight when an aileron horn came loose but managed to land off runway without damage. Be careful with aftermarket servo horns. These fit loose and the screw came loose. At this point I am very disappointed at its flying characteristics. This is my first 3 D model but I expect more stability. If my CG is correct, there is something very wrong with the design or the specified CG location. I notice that similar Phoenix models of the Edge have CG issues too when set up to fly electric.
